Example: packing zones

The example records 90 orders, with 30 from each of three packing zones. Packing time is in seconds; item count and parcel mass describe each order.

Download the example data (CSV)

This is the same example used in Help. The CSV contains the observations to import.

1. Create the analysis

In the sidebar, open Plots and create an analysis. Name it, select New blank worksheet, then choose Create analysis.

2. Import the data

On Worksheet, choose Import. Select the downloaded CSV or paste its contents. Set the delimiter to Comma, use Decimal dot, and check First row contains column names. Preview the import, then choose Import into worksheet.

3. Assign the input columns

On Inputs, choose Box plot in Chart type. In Data arrangement, choose One variable by group.

Open the column picker for Measurement and select packing_time_s. For Grouping column, select packing_zone. Each box will summarize the orders from one zone.

4. Set the chart options

In Statistics, check Show outlier symbols. Leave Show individual observations and Show mean unchecked.

In Layout, choose First appearance for Order and Side by side for Comparison layout. Keep Blank categories or groups at Exclude and disclose.

Open Labels and enter Compare packing-time distributions in Chart title. Leave Horizontal axis label and Vertical axis label blank so the source labels are used.

5. Create chart

Choose Create chart, then open Results. Check Data used before comparing the chart with this guide. All stored worksheet rows participate; sorting or filtering the worksheet does not change the analytical sample.

6. Interpret results

  1. Read one box

The line inside a box is the median: half the orders are below it and half above. The box contains the middle 50% of times. Whiskers extend to observed values within the 1.5-IQR fences, where IQR is the width of that middle half.

    Compare packing-time distributions
Thirty packing times per zone, with median lines, quartile boxes and 1.5-IQR whiskers. View full-size chart (opens in a new tab)
  2. Compare the typical times

Each zone has 30 orders. Accessories has the highest median, 161.85 seconds. Mixed_orders has 143.35 seconds and Small_parts has 135.05 seconds. Also compare box and whisker lengths to see how widely times vary.

  3. Check the flags

No order is flagged by the 1.5-IQR rule, so Boxplot flags has no rows. This does not prove that every reading is correct. The whiskers and fences are not customer acceptance limits.

  4. Investigate the difference

Check item counts and order mix before ranking zones or changing staffing. The chart describes these orders; it does not show that the zone itself caused the difference.

Data used

Worksheet rows is 90; Eligible observations across series is 90; Excluded observations is 0. All source rows are used. Check these counts and keep the example’s column assignments when comparing runs. Worksheet sorting and filters do not change the analytical sample.

All stored rows are considered in original order. Worksheet sorting and filters do not change the analytical sample.

Data summary

Series names the measurement or group. Valid and Missing give counts; Mean and Median describe the center. Sample SD describes spread. Minimum and Maximum are the observed ends; Q1 and Q3 enclose the middle half. These summaries describe the captured observations, not acceptance limits. IQR is Q3 minus Q1. Lower fence and Upper fence are 1.5 IQR below Q1 and above Q3. Lower whisker and Upper whisker are the most extreme observed values within those fences; the app uses (n + 1)p quartiles.

Boxplot flags

This table has no rows: none of the 90 orders is beyond its group’s 1.5-IQR fences. When a row is present, Series names its group, Worksheet row locates the source record and Value gives the flagged measurement. A flag calls for investigation, not automatic deletion.

Full chart observations

Series identifies the group; Worksheet row locates the source record. X retains source-row position and Y is the original measurement. X is not horizontal placement within a displayed group. Check the original record before treating a point as an error.

7. Create a report

Keep the native chart and Data used, together with Data summary, Boxplot flags, Full chart observations. Record the column assignments and chart options. Include the study context and any checks of unusual observations. Keep the chart’s units and the limitations described in the walkthrough.

Choose Add to report from the completed run. Open Choose individual items and advanced options to select tables and charts, then choose Add to draft. Hidden items stay in the saved analysis.

Name the report and add the purpose of the study and your interpretation. Choose Save, review Preview, then use Export → Download HTML. The example below contains the full selected content, including results beyond one screen.

Complete native output for this Help example, including applicable tables, charts and run notes. Report numbers use the app’s displayed precision. Exported charts are static. On narrow screens, scroll wide charts and tables sideways.
